The Marine Pathway provides structured, full‑time training designed to prepare participants for entry‑level roles in the marine and yachting industry. Delivered through HLSCC’s Marine Centre, the Marine Professional Training (MPT) Level 1 Programme combines technical instruction, safety certifications, and professional development to ensure participants are fully prepared for work in a high‑demand, internationally connected sector.

Programme Structure & Commitment

Participants enrolled in the Marine Pathway attend training full‑time, Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and are expected to fully commit to the programme schedule.

Training is delivered in two phases:

Phase 1: Marine Training Workshops

During the initial training phase, participants complete a series of intensive workshops covering core marine competencies, including:

  • STCW Basic Safety Training (BST)
  • ASA 101 – Basic Keelboat Sailing
  • ABYC Fundamentals of Marine Technology, including:
    • Marine Engines
    • Marine Systems
    • Composites and Marine Carpentry
  • RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship
  • Swimming and Water Safety, delivered in partnership with BVI Lifeguards
  • Customer Service for Marine Students
  • Professional Development Workshops, including:
    • CV and résumé writing
    • Workplace etiquette
    • Communication and conflict‑resolution skills

This phase focuses on building strong foundational skills in safety, seamanship, professionalism, and technical awareness — key requirements for securing employment within the marine industry.

Phase 2: MPT Level 1 Apprenticeship (8 Weeks)

Upon successful completion of the marine training workshops, participants may be recommended for placement in the MPT Level 1 Apprenticeship Programme.

During the eight‑week apprenticeship, participants are required to work 40 hours per week (typically 8 hours per day, 5 days per week) with approved marine industry host companies.

To ensure a broad and well‑rounded experience, apprentices rotate between host companies every two weeks, allowing each participant to gain hands‑on exposure in up to four different marine work environments

Industry placements may include:

  • Charter and Day Trip Companies
  • Marine Service Providers
  • Marinas and Boatyards

Apprentices work under professional supervision, enabling them to apply their training in real‑world settings while developing confidence, responsibility, and industry‑relevant experience.

By completing the Marine Pathway, participants gain:

  • Internationally recognised marine certifications
  • Practical, on‑the‑job experience
  • Professional workplace skills
  • Increased employability within the marine and yachting sector
